Exploring the New Testament in Asia

Evangelical Perspectives

£20.99

There is a growing recognition that God’s design is for us to read Scripture alongside the whole church in all of its cultural and linguistic diversity. Exploring the New Testament in Asia is a textbook for students and scholars of the New Testament to help the church hear and see the good news of Jesus anew.

This collection of essays offers theological reflections on New Testament themes from Asian perspectives, while addressing contextual issues in light of the New Testament. Touching on topics such as salvation, holiness, poverty, ethnic tensions, reconciliation, honoring elders, persecution, and hospitality, the scholars in this book demonstrate the importance of a varied contemporary context for understanding the New Testament. The result is a theological contribution that is both contextually relevant and biblically faithful.

Endorsements

The essays in Exploring the New Testament in Asia are an informative attempt to listen to the New Testament with Asian ears, hear what stands out, explain its relevance to the many Asian contexts, and show others, especially those of us in the West, how we can learn from and with our brothers and sisters spread across Asia in terms of how to read Scripture faithfully.

This volume, edited by Samson L. Uytanlet and Bennet Lawrence, represents the very best combination of unswerving faithfulness to the non-negotiables of Scripture with the need to communicate gospel truths in the most relevant way possible in each of the world’s cultures and to address the biggest questions spawned by those cultures. A welcome and treasured gift for the church worldwide.

Craig L. Blomberg, PhD
Distinguished Professor Emeritus of New Testament,
Denver Seminary, Colorado, USA

A good way to interrupt our own localized readings of the Bible is to hear from readers in other contexts. The authors of Exploring the New Testament in Asia provide an expansive set of lenses for understanding the New Testament. Taking seriously the inevitability of hermeneutics, this volume seeks to open up avenues for mutual understanding and thoughtful recontextualization.

Jeannine K. Brown, PhD
David Price Professor of Biblical and Theological Foundations,
Director of Online Programs,
Bethel University, Minnesota, USA

Exploring the New Testament in Asia is biblically sound, contextually relevant, and comprehensive in scope for facilitators and students of theological education. Articles by eminent scholars provide exceptional insights as they speak from their excellent learning, teaching experience, and down-to-earth approach in their contexts of Asian realities with global expressions of the New Testament. I highly recommend this compilation of essays for teaching and as an introduction to scholarly research undertaking.

Ashish Chrispal, PhD
Senior Advisor, Overseas Council

If previous generations emphasized historical context for making sense of the New Testament, today we have also learned the importance of our varied contemporary contexts. Exploring Scripture with Asian eyes and ears, these scholars provide us with fresh insight into both the message of the New Testament and the ongoing challenges of faithful interpretation.

Joel B. Green, PhD
Senior Professor of New Testament Interpretation,
Fuller Theological Seminary, California, USA

Using “Asian ears” that hear the Scriptures afresh and “Asian eyes” that see Asia today, the chapters in this book re-explore the New Testament’s Christology, salvation, visions of holiness, gender relations, and hope for the future. There are also chapters that introduce areas particularly relevant in Asia, such as poverty, persecution, ethnic strife, filial piety, hierarchy, and the spirit world, where the New Testament needs to speak afresh. This is an excellent resource.

Bishop Emeritus, The Methodist Church in Singapore
