Living Radical Discipleship Wins CT Book of the Year
16 December 2021

CARLISLE, CUMBRIA— John Stott was known for his insistence that Christians must allow their faith to influence every area of their lives. Now a book that continues his legacy of radical discipleship has won a Christianity Today Book Award. Living Radical Discipleship, edited by Laura S. Meitzner Yoder and published by Langham Publishing, was crowned the winner in the "Christian Living & Discipleship" category. This book, a collection of essays by those profoundly influenced  by John Stott, prompt Christians to consider how their faith drives their approach to many of the pressing issues of the day, such as climate change and questions of justice.

Reacting to the award, Dr. Yoder said: “I’m grateful to the amazing people at Langham Publishing for embracing this project, and for Langham’s faithful, everyday work in amplifying the work of scholar-leaders from Majority World regions. I am hopeful that this book, with contributors from five continents, will invite readers to consider anew John Stott’s prompting follow to Jesus in all of life and with loving obedience.”

The award is a first for Langham Publishing. Director of Publishing Luke Lewis said: “We are delighted to see one of our titles receive recognition with this prestigious book award, alongside so many other great books recently published.

“It seems fitting as we near the end of the year in which we have celebrated the centenary of John Stott’s birth, that we have a book inspired by his own call ‘that faith commitments must be evident in the everyday lives of Christ’s followers.’ Congratulations to Dr. Yoder for all her hard work in making this book a reality, and thank you to each of the contributors.”

Langham Publishing is a ministry of Langham Partnership, founded by John Stott. International Director Tayo Arikawe commented: “I would like to offer my congratulations to Laura on receiving this award. This book, which continues on with the radical discipleship approach of John Stott, challenges us to live under the lordship of Christ in all areas of our lives. This is a book that should be read by all Christians! Within Langham I have given a copy to all staff members.”

The book was the outcome of the Human Needs and Global Resources Symposium, inspired by the legacy of John Stott and hosted by Wheaton College in October 2019. It contains contributions from Dr. Yoder, Ruth Padilla DeBorst, Jason Fileta, Mark Labberton, David Zac Niringiye, Kuki Rokhum, Myrto Theocharous and Christopher J.H. Wright.

The Religious Other Another Langham publication was shortlisted for the award in the "Missions & Global Church" category. The Religious Other, edited by Martin Accad and Jonathan Andrews, is a collection of essays drawn from the 2018 and 2019 Middle East Consultations hosted by the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary. These essays engage the need for a carefully developed theological understanding of Islam, its origins and its sacred text.

Langham Publishing is grateful to Christianity Today for this award and looks forward to a continued partnership in serving the church worldwide.

Living Radical Discipleship

Edited by Laura S. Meitzner Yoder

John Stott’s legacy of faithful Christian discipleship continues to impact Christians on every continent and in every sphere of life. This book pays homage to that legacy and to Stott’s unwavering commitment to Christ’s transformative Lordship over all facets of existence, especially those we may find particularly convenient to ignore. Living Radical Discipleship calls us to repentance, to recommitment, and to wholehearted discipleship.
