As we observe World Refugee Day this year, we have curated a list of must-read books on migration and displacement that explore how the church is biblically called to embrace refugees, migrants, and the stateless.

We hope that these books will not only provide insights on how each of us can help others find a place to belong, but also encourage us to learn from the resilience and hope that refugees demonstrate in the face of loss and suffering.

Strangers in the Kingdom

Strangers in the Kingdom asks why God cares for the displaced, presenting biblical, theological, and missiological foundations for ministries to those who have been uprooted from their homes and all that is familiar. Addressing the humanitarian and legal needs of the displaced is the starting point, but relief, repatriation, and resettlement programs need to help the stranger find a place to call home.

The Wayfarer

In The Wayfarer, Dr. Barnabé Anzuruni Msabah engages the global refugee crisis from an interdisciplinary perspective that encompasses both development studies and theological reflection. He also reminds us that refugees are not passive recipients but powerful examples of courage, resilience, and hope who can, in their turn, transform our nations and our faith communities for the better.

Compassion and the Mission of God

Why does God care for the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized? Compassion and the Mission of God traces God’s compassion as it is revealed in the Old and New Testaments, exploring the expression and impact of compassion in the early church through its actions and teachings as part of its witness. It is an excellent biblical and theological foundation for anyone involved or interested in ministries of social justice, relief, development and compassion.

Tackling Trauma

Edited by Paul A. Barker

In this book, a team of experienced and informed Christian professionals from around the world offer a biblical response to trauma through clinical and theological wisdom and their first-hand experience of witnessing and experiencing trauma. The contributions provide practical responses to people’s trauma, rather than mere descriptions of the problems, making it an ideal resource for pastors, counsellors, humanitarian workers and students.

The God That the Poor Seek

In this book, Rupen Das challenges the assumption that conversion looks the same regardless of culture or religious context, and he explores the particularities of conversion for some of the world’s poorest populations. Filled with practical insights for those ministering to the world’s poor in contexts of missions, development, or local outreach, this book offers a powerful glimpse into the identity of the crucified God who knows human pain and does not turn his back on human suffering.
